Grand Theft Auto 6 is probably one of the most hotly anticipated games which videogame fans are keen to see come to next-gen consoles.
Many fans were hopeful of seeing the game during PlayStation's big PS5 reveal event in June, but alas, it didn't come.
nstead, an 'enhanced' edition of GTA 5 confirmed to launch in the second half of 2021, it seems fairly nailed on that we won't see GTA 6 come to PS4 and Xbox One.
No, more likely Grand Theft Auto's next big release will more than likely be a next-gen console exclusive.
As it stands it's unlikely we'll see the game launch for a few more years at the best.
However, as we've mentioned before, we still could see the game's big teaser trailer drop at some point this year. We say that since, typically Rockstar release a teaser a good few years ahead of the game actually going live.
For instance, GTA 5 was announced on October 25, 2011, but it wasn't until 17 September 2013 that it was released on PS3 and Xbox 360.
Likewise, Red Dead Redemption 2 was first announced on October 18, 2016 and was originally intended to release in the second half of 2017, but didn't actually make it to consoles until October 26, 2018.
So there's form, and if we were to see GTA 6 launching in 2022, it's possible a teaser could be coming later this year.
For now though, there are little tidbits of info which suggest the game has been in the works for years already at Rockstar Games.
That might sound crazy, but keep in mind that Roger Clark, who played Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, had his first day on set in August 2013; and the game didn't launch until the end of 2018.
With that in mind (and looking for an excuse to use a fancy new website feature) we've attempted to pull together something of a timeline of events related to Grand Theft Auto 6.
A trail of Rockstar Games breadcrumbs if it were. We've no doubt overlooked a few (if so, by all means get in touch and let us know) and we'll try to keep this updated in the future.
For now, here it is, a timeline of leaks, rumours and industry insight surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6.

TV actor Jorge Consejo posts a selfie on Instagram wearing a mocap suit with the caption
"Wish I could say! #ButTheStudioWontLetMe
On it's own a harmless detail, but this might make more sense further down...

Tech Radar reports that “Preliminary work” on GTA 6 has started.
The site source couldn’t talk about the location the game will be set in, but did suggest that at one point Rockstar were looking at setting the game in Tokyo.
Supposedly Rockstar were “serious” about the idea of a Tokyo-based GTA, but later scrapped plans to focus on titles set in and around the United States.

Stuntman, Tim Neff's online resume leaks and suggests he has worked on Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA VI.
Neff also posted some instagram photos from Rockstar San Diego office, with captions suggesting he was there for work.
Neff later denied his involvement in the games, but to date he has been credited in Red Dead Redemption 2.
A CV for Neff also suggested he was working on GTA 6, but it was also denied as false.

Jorge Consejo (the Instagram guy) has his resume leaked and it appears to show he's working on GTA 6.
His resume reads: "Grand Theft Auto VI (CGI) 2018, The Mexican (Featured), Rockstar Games.
This was first picked up on the GTA Forums.

Rockstar's VP of product development Jeronimo Barrera departs after 20 years.
In a passing quote upon leaving Rockstar, Barrera states:
"If I had stayed at Rockstar it would have been more GTAs, more RDRs and less of this other stuff going on out there right now."
Whilst certainly nothing concrete, it does seem to suggest these two brands are the clear focus for Rockstar Games, moving forward.

A former Rockstar India employee mentions creating vehicles for GTA 5 and GTA 6 in his artstation resume and on Linkedin.
The junior vehicle artist states he created "concept vehicles matching with real world for GTA V DLC and upcoming GTA VI".

Leah Sokolowsky, a location scout, appears on the Film Florida podcast and appears to suggest she is working for a big company scouting Florida.
"Recently as you're aware we've had a change in the types of productions that are coming to our state. So I've also been very fotunate to get a large client that has hired me to arrange basically site tours and visits. It's uh digital media company. And I've signed an NDA so I can't disclose who it is. But they've been exploring various areas of our state, and of other states in the south east. And I've been planning and arranging those visits for their personnel and that's been kind of a very interesting expansion of what I normally do, as well."
Infamous Rockstar source, @Yan2295, appears to suggest that the scouting could indeed be tied to GTA 6.

A lengthy GTA 6 leak appears on Reddit and is widely picked up by most outlets.
It suggests GTA 6 is codenamed 'Project Americas' and features four main characters with a storyline set across multiple decades. Allegedly the storyline would deal with the rise of a drug cartel, and be set mostly in Vice City
Here's the leak:
• The next GTA title has been in development since 2012, but production didn't begin properly until 2015, but even then the team was focusing more on Red Dead Redemption 2.
• It's another Rockstar Worldwide Production.
• Codename is PROJECT AMERICAS.
• Set in both Vice City and a new fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro.
• Some linear missions take place in Liberty City, but it isn't an open world (think Ludendorff in GTA 5).
• Game will balance realism and arcade and it won't be as realistic as Red Dead Redemption 2.
• One playable protagonist: male, not female, despite supposed leaks.
• Set in 1970s-1980s.
• You play as an up and coming drug lord-wannabe named "Ricardo". Another key character called “Kacey” is a part of the narrative. You start off as a grunt doing runs as a cocaine smuggler from Vice City to the new large South American area before making connections with big time drug lords and making your way up. Multiple cities.
• There will also be a giant prison which will play a part in the game.
• Will feature a 'chapter' system similar to a Tarantino flick or Red Dead Redemption 2.
• Weather is a heavy focus (hurricanes, floods, etc).
• Buildings change over the eras, vehicles too. So older, rare classic cars get more expensive as time progresses etc. Full economy.
• Heavily inspired by Netflix's Narcos.
• They want to have an incredible 70s/80s soundtrack.
• A younger Martin Madrazo will make an appearance as will his father who is a big drug lord at the time. You do some missions for the Madrazo family involving hits on other gangs.
• Drug empire building is a mechanic similar to Vice City Stories but bigger. Think the GTA Online system and dial it up to 10.
• You can only have weapons on your person. No arsenal in your back pocket, like Red Dead Redemption 2.
• Your personal vehicle will be like your horse saddle in Red Dead Redemption 2. All your equipment is stored in the trunk. You also store your body armour in the car. If you wear it, it appears, no longer just an invisible thing.
• There will be tons of subtitle reading. Think Max Payne 3 amounts, very immersive, like watching an episode of Narcos. Whenever you're in South America, don't expect to hear much English. Vice City however is a mix of everything, but mostly English.
• Last bit of narrative info, it will discuss topics such as HIV and the immigration crisis of the time. A fictional version of Fidel Castro etc.
• Next-gen only, not PS4 or Xbox One [aka PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett]
• GTA 6 is now their primary focus, alongside another title (which might be Bully 2).
• Game is still in Pre-Alpha so names, locations, details could and probably will change.
• No ETA on a release date.

This was followed up by a photograph of the alleged document as proof, including a buisness card for someone at Take Two, the company who own Rockstar Games.

The team at Ruffian Games in Scotland starts hiring engineers to work on "unspecified titles for Rockstar Games"
March 2020
Multiple sites pick up the Jorge Consejo (him again) resume rumour again (for some reason) in March 2020. Again it contains much the same information, that he's working on GTA 6 as a character known as The Mexican
This time the rumours prompt a response from the actor, who takes to Twitter, writing:
"Dear friends, While I read every message from you, please know that because of contract stipulations sometimes I’m unable to comment on certain projects. Please don’t feel ignored or unseen. I appreciate and value every single one of you."
It's certainly not a denial...

In his final piece for Kotaku, well-known journalist Jason Schreier suggests Grand Theft Auto 6 is in early development at Rockstar Games.
The piece goes on to suggest the company has a newly modified mentality towards employee overtime and stress, the studio will "'start out with a moderately sized release [...] that is then expanded with regular updates over time, which may help mitigate stress and crunch".
Notably, Schreier believes the game to be in early development – years away from release. This is something that's hotly contested by the GTA community, however...
16 April 2020
Some notable leakers in the GTA community dispute Jason Schreier's report, claiming that the game is in its early development stage.
Noted leaker, Yan2295, suggests the game was actually likely to be in the "early stages of testing", rather than the early stages of development.
"Despite what Jason said, there is absolutely no way GTA 6 is still in early stages," the leaker added.
"I'm telling, it's just not possible. Unless they have a very weird definition of "early stages". Maybe early stages of testing, sure, but not of development."
Likewise, TezFunz2 also added:
"Next title, a new GTA title is in "early stages of development"? It's hard to believe that when I'm hearing it's "halfway done" or even beyond that.
"Take note that RDR2 took approximately 8 or 7 years worth of development, main production started right after RDR1 release & recording sessions began in 2013."
11 June 2020
Opening PlayStation's PS5 reveal event is GTA 5, which is announced as coming to next-gen consoles as part of an improved and enhanced edition of the game.
"Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 5 will feature a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the console’s powerful new hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever."
The game is set to release in the second half of 2021.
12 June 2020
Following the announcement of GTA 5 for next-gen consoles, Jason Schreier (speaking on the Triple Click Podcast) outlined his opinions on the status of Rockstar's next open-world title.
“I will say, that I know a lot of people out there, especially a lot of avid GTA fans, probably skewing younger have been upset because I said that GTA 6 was in kinda early development and won’t be out for a few years.
"I think GTA 5 coming out next year to PS5 is evidence of that, [and if that isn't evidence of a later GTA 6 release] then I don’t know what else is.
"Because GTA 6 is a ways away. Like, I wouldn’t expect that game until maybe the end of 2022, 2023. I think [that's more realistic] for a game like that.”
Tysm for the appreciation bro :D
